Drink Recipe: Caipirinha

Ok, this is my favorite hot day cocktail. It is a fresh summery drink that is all business. Ironically we see mojitos made quite a bit but too few caipirinhas. The secret to these amazing drinks is the base liquor, cachaça. Cachaça is similar to rum in that it is made from sugarcane, but unlike rum it's actually made from the sugarcane juice that is then distilled into cachaça. If you've ever bought a sugarcane as a kid in Hawaii and remember that distinct taste, that is cachaça. Add lime and sugar and you have the Caipirinha which is also Brazil's national drink. You should be able to find Cachaça at most liquor stores next to the rum.

Caipirinha
  • 1 lime
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (caster or superfine if you have it)
  • Cachaça
How To:
  1. Take a shaker and add one cut up lime (into 8 or so pieces) and pour sugar on top.
  2. Muddle lime and sugar.
  3. Add ice, Cachaça and shake.
  4. Pour mixture into a rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish with lime.
  5. Drink and enjoy.
