Father's Day - Lots of Food and Wine

Feels like it’s been weeks since I posted. Turns out its been only a few days. Well as I planned out my first Father’s Day menu and wine I was super excited to write about it. At least that was my intention; although as the day progressed I was super busy and in the end with everyone over at the house I couldn’t find the time to write out some tasting notes. You’ll see that I served the wine that started it all for me and feel a little dejected that I couldn’t write it up, but in a way it’s better that way. Too much anxiety to write about that memorable of a wine for me personally. I will tell you it blew me away again and therefore it remains very special to me. Side note: Since the event was at our house and I didn’t have to drive my palate was probably not in optimum writing shape anyway.

So, what did we eat for dinner? Still on my Bobby Flay kick (got his MESA Grill cookbook for Father’s Day) I grilled some flank steak with a southwestern rub I made with ancho chile, chile de arbol, dry mustard, garlic powder, onion powder and a ‘healthy’ dose of salt and pepper. I dreamt up this avocado, crème fraiche, lime and cilantro sauce for the steak…as I’m at the store it occurred to me I was actually just making a glorified guacamole. Still made a heck of a sauce that brought a great soothing creamy fatty richness to offset the rub and steak.

On the side I prepared a corn dish of roasted corn, red peppers, jalepenos and homemade basil butter. The basil butter really was the star here, tons of flavor that layered perfectly with the other items. I grilled the corn in their husk which is the way to do it. Just remove the little strings under the husk, then pulled them back up and on to the hot grill.

Dessert was homemade vanilla bean ice cream. Heavy cream + whole milk + sugar + whole vanilla bean + egg yolks = heaven. My mom made a rhubarb pie to go with and this is just another reason I didn’t take the time to write, I was busy eating.

A very happy Father’s Day to my dad and father-in-law who shared the evening with us. We couldn’t be more blessed to have such great fathers.

Dinner through pictures…

A perfect Father's Day.
